GIS File Import

The GIS File Import process involves three steps: 1. Loading data from MIF and MID files The process starts with the Collections Import Wizard. Collection header data and polygon boundaries are loaded from MapInfo® text files. A MIF file consists of a header section containing the relevant metadata, followed by a data section that contains the actual polygon boundaries. Each MIF file is accompanied by a MID file that contains a row of header data for each collection. The validation process will identify obvious issues in the input data and generate appropriate diagnostic messages. The import wizard provides simple editing tools that can be used to correct basic errors. Once all critical errors have been corrected, the import process can proceed to the second step. 2. Preview stage In the preview stage, a graphical viewer and associated data frames can be used to navigate and examine the collection data in more detail. The preview form provides advanced editing tools that can be used to identify and correct more complex issues. Note that the actual polygon points cannot be changed in the viewer. Any problems that require editing of the polygon boundaries can only be addressed in the GIS application. 3. Import stage Once the issues have been fixed, the final import can take place. The header data and polygon boundaries are imported into the database.
